Specialist library with a focus in North European archaeology

The library of the Museum of Archaeology Schloss Gottorf is a reference library with some 50,000 volumes and is available to both the employees of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation Schloss Gottorf and to the general public upon request. We have 230 subscribed periodicals and 80 series. Moreover, we constantly exchange publications from the Archaeological Museum with 98 partners and occasionally with 30 libraries.

Our stocks primarily cover the specialist areas of North European archaeology and ethnology, additionally numerous volumes on historical science, scientific dating and analysis processes, on conservation and museology.

Regional focussing on North Europe has been further developed with the foundation of the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology. We pursue the objective of providing all important, regularly published periodicals and series relating to Scandinavia’s and the Baltic’s archaeology in-full, both via our subscriptions and with our selection of exchange partners.

The library records all volumes using the Allegro-C software since 1993. A reading room is available, in which a limited number of manual devices can be set-up briefly.
